EPA releases revised guidance for proponents on greenhouse gas emissions

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has revised its guidance on mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from significant new or expanding proposals in Western Australia.

The Environmental Factor Guidance – Greenhouse Gas Emissions and EPA Technical Guidance – Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions released today, will help proponents of significant proposals in the State prepare for an environmental assessment by the EPA.

High Street upgrade recommended for environmental approval

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has found a proposal to upgrade a section of High Street in Fremantle is environmentally acceptable, provided conditions to reduce noise levels, retain mature trees and minimise the impact on black cockatoo habitat are met.

Releasing the EPA’s environmental assessment of the High Street upgrade today, EPA Chair Dr Tom Hatton said the project’s proponent, Main Roads WA, would have to undertake measures to minimise the proposal’s impact on the surrounding environment.

EPA recommends environmental approval for State Barrier Fence extension
November 26, 2018

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has found a proposal to extend the State Barrier Fence environmentally acceptable and recommends it could be implemented subject to certain conditions, including measures to protect the western ground parrot.

Releasing a report and recommendations on the 660-kilometre (km) extension of the fence, EPA Chair Dr Tom Hatton said the Authority had taken a holistic view of the likely impacts of the proposal.

EPA recommends approval of expanded nickel mining operations near Leinster
November 19, 2018

A proposal to build and operate a nickel sulfide mine near Leinster has been recommended for approval by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

BHP Billiton Nickel West Pty’s proposed Mt Keith Satellite Project is located near the existing Mt Keith Mine nickel operation, approximately 80 kilometres north of Leinster.

The proposed mine will produce around 9.6 million tonnes of nickel ore a year for potential use in lithium batteries. The ore will be trucked to the existing Mt Keith Mine for processing.

Change in technology for Waste to Energy facility given conditional approval

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has recommended conditional approval for New Energy Corporation Pty Ltd to change the technology proposed for its East Rockingham Waste to Energy (WtE) facility.

In making the recommendation EPA Chair Dr Tom Hatton said changing the technology from a gasification process to a combustion process, which is widely used around the world, did not bring any further risks to the surrounding environment or communities.

EPA reviews request to extend Point Grey Marina construction start
August 6, 2018

Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has advised on the extension of the start of construction of an onshore marina and associated boating infrastructure on the western side of Point Grey, near Dawesville.

Releasing the report, EPA Chair Dr Tom Hatton said there had been no changes to the proposal or significant changes to the marina’s local environment, nor any new or additional information that would change its original advice. The EPA was satisfied that the existing implementation conditions would continue to manage and mitigate impacts of the proposal.
