EPA recommends approval for BHP’s long-term mining plan in the Pilbara

A strategic mining proposal for the Pilbara, by resources giant BHP, has been recommended for approval by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

BHP Billiton Iron Ore Pty Ltd’s Pilbara Expansion-Strategic Proposal sets out the miner’s operations in the region for the next 50-100 years, including new iron ore mines, the expansion of existing mines and associated infrastructure.

EPA recommends approval for South West lithium manufacturing plant

Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Chair Dr Tom Hatton has recommended approval of a lithium hydroxide product manufacturing plant in an industrial area on the outskirts of Bunbury.

Releasing the EPA’s environmental impact assessment for Albemarle Lithium Pty Ltd’s (Albemarle) Albemarle Kemerton Plant, Dr Hatton said the proposal was environmentally acceptable and could proceed, subject to certain conditions.

Pardoo Irrigated Agriculture Stage 3 proposal given EPA approval
June 13, 2018

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has recommended conditional approval for the Pardoo Irrigated Agriculture Project-Stage 3 in the Pilbara, in its report on the proposal released today.

EPA Chair Dr Tom Hatton said that after careful consideration of Pardoo Beef Corporation Pty Ltd’s centre-pivot irrigation proposal, he found the environmental impacts could be managed through conditions recommended by the Authority as well as the company’s Environmental Management Plan.

Busselton-Margaret River Airport expansion gets conditional approval from the EPA
June 6, 2018

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has recommended conditional environmental approval for the Busselton-Margaret River Airport Expansion proposal, with restrictions on noise levels and night-time flying.

EPA Chair Dr Tom Hatton said the airport’s proposed expansion by the City of Busselton could result in larger planes like a Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 utilising the airport, and the noise impacts on the surrounding areas would have to be carefully managed.

Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Chair Dr Tom Hatton has recommended approval for a second irrigated agriculture proposal in the Kimberley this year.

Releasing the EPA’s environmental impact assessment for Argyle Cattle Company Pty Ltd’s Shamrock Station Irrigation Project, Dr Hatton said the proposal was environmentally acceptable and could proceed, subject to certain conditions.

Index of Biodiversity Surveys for Assessments

The EPA has proudly partnered with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety to deliver the Index of Biodiversity Surveys for Assessments (IBSA), a new project that captures vital biodiversity data and makes it publicly available. IBSA was developed as a result of collaboration between the State Government and the Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute.

EPA gives green light for irrigated agriculture proposal in the Kimberley
March 21, 2018

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has recommended the implementation of Kimberley Agriculture Investment’s Carlton Plain: Stage 1 irrigated agriculture proposal, subject to certain conditions.

EPA Chair Dr Tom Hatton said Carlton Plain Stage 1, is one of four separate irrigated agriculture proposals across the State undergoing EPA assessment.

Environmental assessments for development proposals on the rise
December 12, 2017

The number of significant projects requiring assessment by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) are up 50% over last year.

EPA chairman Dr Tom Hatton said development proposal referrals that warranted formal assessment had sharply increased in recent months and showed no signs of slowing down.

“In the first five months of this financial year, 15 development proposals were of a scale and complexity warranting formal assessment,” Dr Tom Hatton said.
