Public and stakeholders invited to have say on revised procedures

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has released a draft revision of its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedures for public feedback as it moves towards implementing amendments to the Environmental Protection Act 1986 (EP Act).

Amendments to the EP Act were passed by Parliament in November 2020 and affect the EPA’s entire environmental impact assessment process, under Part IV of the Act.

Registrations open for Exmouth Gulf community meeting
January 20, 2021

Stakeholders and community members interested in the future of the Exmouth Gulf will have an opportunity to directly engage with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) at a community meeting in March.

The EPA is currently putting together strategic advice for the Minister for Environment on the potential cumulative impacts of the proposed activities and developments on the environmental, social and cultural values of Exmouth Gulf.

EPA recommends environmental approval of Yalyalup sand mine
January 18, 2021

A proposal to build and operate a mineral sands mine south-east of Busselton has been recommended for approval by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) subject to conditions including minimising the impact to Carnaby’s cockatoo habitat.

The Yalyalup Mineral Sands Project, about 11km south-east of Busselton, includes the development of mine pits, solar evaporation ponds, a wet concentration processing plant and water management infrastructure.

Public invited to have say on pressures and values of Exmouth Gulf

Community and industry will have an opportunity to have their say on the values and pressures in the Exmouth Gulf, with a three-week Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) public consultation period opening this week.

The EPA has agreed to a request by the Minister for Environment to provide strategic advice on how activities and developments will impact on the environmental, social and cultural values of Exmouth Gulf under section 16(e) of the Environmental Protection Act 1986.

Miralga Creek iron ore proposal recommended for environmental approval

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has recommended environmental approval for a new Pilbara-based iron ore mine, subject to conditions including managing impacts on the habitat of the northern quoll, ghost bat and Pilbara leaf-nosed bat.

Atlas Iron Pty Ltd propose to construct and operate the Miralga Creek Direct Shipping Ore (DSO) Project over four to five years at three mining areas, situated about 100 kilometres south-east of Port Hedland.

Waitsia Gas Project Stage 2 recommended for environmental approval

The Waitsia Gas Project Stage 2 proposal has been recommended for environmental approval by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), subject to strict conditions on water management, flora and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Proponent, AWE Perth Pty Ltd, under the Mitsui E&P Australia brand, proposes to construct and operate a conventional gas facility about 16 kilometres south-east of the Dongara-Port Denison town sites. Hydraulic fracture stimulation does not form part of this proposal, which will further develop the Waitsia gas field.

New Pilbara power station to reach net zero emissions by 2040

A proposal to construct and operate a new gas-fired power station at a Pilbara mine has been recommended for environmental approval, subject to conditions supporting the proponent's commitment to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has completed its assessment of a proposal by Pilbara Energy Generation Pty Ltd (PEG) for a new 165MW power station – the first under the EPA’s new greenhouse gas emissions guidance released in April this year.

First stage of Bunbury Outer Ring Road recommended for approval
June 29, 2020

Main Roads’ proposal to build the northern and central sections of the Bunbury Outer Ring Road has been recommended for environmental approval.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has completed its assessment of the 19 kilometre freeway, recommending it may be implemented but with conditions that include the mitigation of impacts on the local western ringtail possum.

EPA Chair Dr Tom Hatton said the proposal occurred within predominately cleared land, and would involve clearing 92 hectares (ha) of native vegetation within a 625 ha development envelope.

Environmental approval recommended for Warrawoona Gold project
June 24, 2020

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has recommended environmental approval for the development and operation of a new gold mine in the Pilbara, subject to conditions related to limiting the impact on fauna habitats and contributing to an offsets fund.

Calidus Resources’ proposed Warrawoona Gold Project is to include two open pits, one underground mine, a waste rock dump and tailings dam within a 1,000 hectare development envelope, about 20 kilometres south of Marble Bar.

Environmental approval recommended for large-scale renewable energy hub

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has recommended environmental approval for a large-scale wind and solar renewable energy project in the Pilbara, subject to conditions including managing and monitoring impacts on migratory birds.

EPA Chair Dr Tom Hatton said the proposed Asian Renewable Energy Hub comprised a series of onshore wind turbines and solar panels situated about 220 kilometres east of Port Hedland, with a transmission cable corridor to the coast and subsea cables to the edge of state waters.
