Landfill for future widening of the Mitchell Freeway at Lake Monger

The proposal is to place sand (surcharge) to a height of 4.5 metres along a 1.9 kilometre length of the Mitchell Freeway adjacent to Lake Monger. The sand is to be piled to consolidate peat and an old sanitary landfill site for works associated with the widening of the Mitchell Freeway and the provision of a median strip for the proposed Northern Suburbs Rail Link. On 9 June, 1989, the Environmental Protection Authority received a referral from the Department of Mines of a mining lease application (MLA 70/473) by Magic Soil Ply Ltd. The mining lease application is to supersede a prospecting licence application (PLA 70/807) over the same area and is for a proposal to mine diatomaceous earth from the north·western corner of the lake bed. The Water Authority has stated that following the completion of the Pinjar groundwater development, a new major water supply source will be required by 1992. This reasoning is based on current and predicted water consumption demand even in view of the Water Authority's public water conservation programme. Proposed remedial treatment of the State Engineering Works site, North Fremantle

The proposal is to rehabilitate the land previously used by the State Engineering Works in North Fremantle. The proposed clean up procedure includes removal of waste material from the site to a gazetted landfill at Henderson in the City of Cockburn, and relocation of leachate spoiled sand on site. Wagerup Alumina Refinery Expansion

Alcoa of Australia Pty Ltd has been operating the Wagerup Refinery (Stage 1) near Waroona (100 km south of Perth) since 1984, under the Alumina Refinery (Wagerup) Agreement and Acts Amendment No 15 of 1978. This agreement covers a production capacity up to 2 mtpa (million tonnes per annum). Initially the refinery produced about 670,000 tpa, but fine tuning of the plant (currently under way) is expected to lift its capacity to 840,000 tpa of alumina.
