Rhone-Poulenc Chimie Australia Pty Ltd (Rhone-Poulenc), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the French company Rhone-Poulenc Chimie, operates a Gallium Plant at Pinjarra, 88km south of Perth. The Gallium Plant site has been developed on a 20 ha area within its 500 ha property. Recently, the plant was put on care and maintenance due to an over-supply of gallium on the world market. Deras (Australia) Pty Ltd (Deras) proposes to establish and operate a 'wet-blue' tannery within the Shire of West Arthur, approximately 14 km north-east of Darkan. Sodium Cyanide Plant Debottlenecking [300]

In December 1988 Australian Gold Reagents Pty Ltd produced a Public Environmental Review document describing its proposal to expand its existing sodium cyanide solution plant at Kwinana and increase its annual production from 15,000 tonnes per annum to 40,000 tonnes per annum. In its assessment, the Environmental Protection Authority concluded that the only issue not fully addressed was that of risks and hazards. Alternative hydrogen supply from CSBP and Farmers for Liquid Air's air separation plant, Kwinana

Liquid Air is seeking to pipe hydrogen from CSBP and Farmers' nearby chlor-alkali plant. The proposal necessitates an extension of the existing 50 mm diameter pipeline through private land owned by Tiwest and CSBP and Farmers over a further distance of some 1.6 km. The proponent has identified a preliminary route for the pipeline extension. Proposal for the export of woodchips through the Port of Bunbury: variation of McLean Consolidated Pty Ltd (1988) project

An application by McLean Consolidated Pty Ltd to export hardwood woodchips derived from the sawmill wastes of the Denmark Sawmill through the Port of Albany was approved by the Minister for Environment in 1988. Since being granted that approval, several factors concerning the original proposal have altered, including change of ownership of both the project and the sawmill. Ammonium nitrate importation through the Port of Esperance

The proposal is to import a dense grade of ammonium nitrate (known as "NITRAM"') from the UK in quantities of 2,000 tonnes at a frequency of three times per year through the Port of Esperance. The product would be transported in 1 ton bulka bags. Two ships, each with 2,000 tonnes of NITRAM, have left their ports of loading already: one is delayed in Africa, the other is proceeding to Australia. Solid Sodium Cyanide Plant Kwinana

The proposal is to construct and operate a sodium cyanide plant at Kwinana. The plant would have the capacity to produce 45,000 tonnes of solid sodium cyanide briquettes annually. Wagerup Alumina Refinery Expansion

Alcoa of Australia Pty Ltd has been operating the Wagerup Refinery (Stage 1) near Waroona (100 km south of Perth) since 1984, under the Alumina Refinery (Wagerup) Agreement and Acts Amendment No 15 of 1978. This agreement covers a production capacity up to 2 mtpa (million tonnes per annum). Initially the refinery produced about 670,000 tpa, but fine tuning of the plant (currently under way) is expected to lift its capacity to 840,000 tpa of alumina. Liquid Air WA Pty Ltd proposes to establish an Air Separation Unit to produce liquid oxygen, nitrogen and argon, and gaseous oxygen and nitrogen at Lot 129 Leath Road, Naval Base, immediately north of Wesfarmers Ltd's LPG extraction plant, and adjacent to Mason Road. Proposed Synthetic Rutile Plant Expansion, Narngulu Industrial Estate, Geraldton

AMC Mineral Sands Ltd, the mineral sands division of Renison Goldfields Consolidated Limited, proposes to expand its synthetic rutile plant on the Narngulu Industrial Estate located 11 km south-east of Geraldton. After expansion, the synthetic rutile plant will occupy some 47 hectares of the 465 hectare Estate. The expansion will increase synthetic rutile production from 112,500 to 260,000 tonnes per annum. Proposed ammonia - urea plant, Kwinana

The proposal is to establish a $450 million ammonia/urea facility in the Kwinana industrial area which will produce 500 000 tonnes per annum (t/a) of ammonia . Approximately half of this ammonia is proposed to be utilised to manufacture 430 000 t/a of urea. The proposal calls for the storage of 30 000 tonnes of ammonia. The proposal involves production of 5 700 tonnes of scoured wool per year, initially, followed later by top making, spinning and knitting facilities.
