Caltex proposes to consolidate its operations into their existing Brack Street, North Fremantle terminal. Ampol Ltd has also agreed to rationalise its operations and participate in the new development. The proposal is to develop an open cut coal mine at the Premier deposit in the Shotts Sub-Basin of the Collie Coal Basin. The Premier area is about 10 kilometres east of Collie and consists mainly of State Forest managed by the Department of Conservation and Land Management. The Peel-Harvey estuarine system is badly degraded. The system shows signs of severe eutrophication (nutrient enrichment), which results in excessive algal growth. The algae live on the nutrients, and multiply rapidly, stifling life in the Estuary in warmer weather. The proposal is to continue current mining of the orebody at Wonnerup, south of the mouth of the Wonnerup Inlet. The proposal is for the mining and processing of approximately 12 million tonnes of alluvial gravels extending for a distance of 2.5km downstream beyond current mining operations in Smoke Creek.
