Strategic Advice

Section 16(e) of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 provides that a function of the Environmental Protection Authority is to advise the Minister for Environment on environmental matters generally, and on any matter which the Minister may refer to it for advice.

The EPA has published many reports outlining its strategic advice on a wide range of issues.

This report, published as Bulletin 1281, provides the Environmental Protection Authority's advice to the Minister for the Environment under section 16(e) of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 on the project by the Department of Housing and Works (DHW) to develop a new town site at Amarillo, a farming property in Karnup. Amarillo has subsequently been renamed Keralup.

The project covers 4000 hectares in the single ownership of the DHW and lies 17km south east of Rockingham and 10km north east of Mandurah. If developed, the area would become a fully integrated urban community housing up to 90 000 people.

This report, published as Bulletin 1256, presents Ministerial Advice requested from the EPA under Section 16(e) of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 on the location of the highest conservation values in the proposed extensions to the Mt Manning Nature Reserve, and surrounding areas which require protection from extractive industries as well as those areas in the proposed extensions to the Mt Manning Nature Reserve for which there is a potential for environmental offsets.

This advice also gives consideration to details of Ministerial Statement 627 with respect to Portman Iron Ore Ltd Koolyanobbing Expansion.

The Environmental Protection Authority has been requested by the Minister for the Environment to provide advice under section 16(e) of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 on the buffer requirements for the Water Corporation's Woodman Point Wastewater Treatment Plant. The request arises out of community concerns regarding the extent of the odour buffer from the Plant.

The EPA has been requested by the Western Australian Minister for the Environment to provide advice under section 16(e) of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 on a policy framework for petroleum exploration and development within the Shark Bay World Heritage Property. The request arises out of the 1997 agreement between the State and Commonwealth governments on the administrative arrangements for the Shark Bay World Heritage Property.

A Management Strategy for the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary System was approved for implementation by the Minister for the Environment on 4 January 1989. The Strategy was developed to address an environmental problem of massive algal growth in the Peel-Harvey System, caused by an increase in nutrients, especially phosphorus, from the estuaries' coastal catchment. Appendices A and B are not included in the download pdf file.

This report, published as Bulletin 1020, provides the Environmental Protection Authority's (EPA's) advice to the Minister for the Environment and Heritage on the strategic assessment of the proposal by the Gas Pipeline Sale Steering Committee (GPSSC) on behalf of the Western Australian State Government to establish a land corridor from the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline to the Oakajee Industrial Estate. The corridor is needed in order to enable future lateral gas pipelines to be constructed to service industries on the Oakajee Estate.
