Environmental Assessment of Proposals to change Forest Management in the South West

Last updated: December 24, 1992

This is the Environmental Protection Authority's environmental assessment and recommendations to the Minister for the Environment on the environmental acceptability of forest management proposals by the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) for 1992 onwards. CALM is now the direct manager of timber harvesting rather than, as previously, the controller of timber companies. The last review by EPA was in 1987 when five to ten year management plans were examined. Read more...

Ewington Open Cut Coal Mine, Collie

Last updated: September 4, 1992

The Ewington Coalmine is a proposed open cut coal mining operation which is on the same large scale as the Muja mining operation. The mining method would follow the practices being employed at the Chicken Creek open cut operation near Muja in the Collie Coal Basin. This involves an open cut, strip mining operation using a dragline. The Collie Basin is a depression within the Archaean basement containing Permian coal-bearing sediments. The Basin covers an area of approximately 274km 2 and... Read more...

Export of Intractable Wastes (including PCBs) from Fremantle Port

Last updated: July 9, 1992

The proposal is to collect an existing backlog of waste polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorinated pesticides which are stored at various centres in Western Australia and export them to the United Kingdom for destruction by high temperature incineration at the Rechem facilities at Fawley and Pontypool. The proposal does not cover waste which may be generated in the future as it is unlikely these materials would ever be used again in Western Australia. Environmental issues relating to... Premier coal mine expansion, Collie

Last updated: April 2, 1992

The proposal is to develop an open cut coal mine at the Premier deposit in the Shotts Sub-Basin of the Collie Coal Basin. The Premier area is about 10 kilometres east of Collie and consists mainly of State Forest managed by the Department of Conservation and Land Management. The Premier Coal Mine would supply approximately 2 million tonnes of coal per year to the proposed private power station due to be built by 1996. It is a proposed open cut coal mining operation which will have a life of 30... Read more...

Beenup power supply

Last updated: March 12, 1992

The proposal is to construct and operate a 132 kilovolt (kV) transmission line between either the Picton or Manjimup substations and Mineral Deposits Limited proposed mineral sands mine at Beenup. SECWA's preferred option is for an overhead supply at 132kV from the Manjimup substation. Two other options from Picton (Great North Road and Margaret River) are also proposed. Read more...

Extension, cleanup and rehabilitation of mineral sands mine, Wonnerup

Last updated: February 11, 1992

The proposal is to continue current mining of the orebody at Wonnerup, south of the mouth of the Wonnerup Inlet. The orebody contains heavy mineral sands and tailings remaining from mining done by another company in the 1960s. Cleanup work on the tailings remaining from the previous mining operation began in 1989 and is expected to be completed by March 1992. The proposal to mine adjacent to the existing operations would extend the mine life up to 12 months, with land restoration and... Read more...

Exploration programme in the D'Entrecasteaux National Park

Last updated: January 10, 1992

The proposal is for an exploration programme to explore for mineral sands and to compile geo-scientific data using geophysical, geological and drilling techniques at locations throughout the length and breadth of the D'Entrecasteaux National Park. The area has been explored from the air using remote sensing geophysical techniques, such as airborne magnetometer surveys, and a number of magnetic anomalies, which may represent mineral sands deposits, have been identified.
