EPA to visit Broome and proposed Browse LNG precinct

Release date:
November 2, 2011

The Environmental Protection Authority will visit Broome this month to meet with community members about the proposed Browse Liquefied Natural Gas Precinct at James Price Point.

EPA Chairman Paul Vogel said the proposal would be discussed with representatives from a cross-section of the community, including the Shire of Broome, the Kimberley Land Council, Goolarabooloo and Goolarabooloo Jabirr Jabirr Traditional Owners, Environs Kimberley and the Save the Kimberley group.

Dr Vogel said the visit on November 17 and 18 would give stakeholders the opportunity to provide their views firsthand to the EPA on environmental issues relevant to the proposal.

“Site visits by the EPA are a common practice and are of immense value in informing our decision-making”, Dr Vogel said.

“The Browse LNG proposal is the most significant strategic environmental impact assessment ever undertaken under the Environmental Protection Act.

“We understand many people are passionate about this proposal so we look forward to using our visit to canvas the views of the community through meetings with up to 20 people who are able to represent a number of groups and individuals.

“We would like to invite anyone with a particular viewpoint to express these to a representative from one of these groups to ensure your view is communicated.”

Dr Vogel said the EPA will consider all public submissions, along with other information, when making its recommendation to the Minister for Environment.

The EPA’s report will be publicly available and subject to a two-week public appeal period to the Minister, who will make the final decision.

Dr Vogel, together with board members Dr Chris Whitaker, Dr Rod Lukatelich and Denis Glennon, will visit Broome and the proposed Precinct area.

As new EPA member Elizabeth Carr previously worked for the proponent, the Department of State Development, she will not take part in the visit or any discussions or decisions on the proposal.
