The Great Eastern Highway presently runs through the Town of Northam.This current alignment has inherent problems for local traffic in terms of congestion and the frequency of accidents. Further problems include noise and visual pollution caused by traffic, particularly heavy vehicles. To alleviate these problems, three different alignments around the town have been put forward by Main Roads Western Australia for environmental impact assessment. Oxleigh Holdings Pty Ltd proposes to develop part of Lot 2 near the corner of Alexander Drive and Gnangara Road Landsdale for residential purposes. A portion of this Lot known as 'Snake Swamp' was identified in recommendation M8 (Wanneroo Wetlands - Eastern Chain) of the Environmental Protection Authority's System Six report, as being valuable for conservation because of its wetland functions. Metroplan - a planning strategy for the Perth metropolitan area released in 1990 - included a commitment to develop the Stirling Regional Centre, extending from Scarborough Beach Road in the south to the Stirling Rail Station and the City of Stirling municipal offices in the north. The proposal is to develop a 30 hectare site on Lot 48 and Part Lot 35 Brixton Street, Kenwick, for mixed density housing. The land immediately to the north of this site is subject to a System 6 recommendation and is managed as a conservation reserve by the University of Western Australia, the owner of the land. An application for Renewal of Excavation Licence by Midland Brick Company Ltd was referred to the Environmental Protection Authority by the Shire of Swan in August 1990. the Authority assessed the environmental impact of the proposal by way of a Consultative Environmental Review in conjunction with four other nearby clay excavation proposals which, together with this proposal were thought to potentially impact on Ellen Brook Nature Reserve and to have common regional issues of rehabilitation... The proposal involves the creation of a nature reserve and bird sanctuary and breeding ground for waterfowl, which would utilise existing wetlands as well as create additional wetlands habitats. The area of the lot is approximately 5.6 hectares. The proponent seeks to retain existing vegetation, as well as planting additional native plant species and an area of eucalypts to assist both in the establishment/maintenance of wildlife habitats and with the reduction of nutrients. The Port Geographe proposal is a residential canal development with harbour, commercial centre and a conservation area. The site lies on the coast immediately east of the existing Busselton built up area, between the ocean foreshore to the north and the Vasse estuary to the south and east. Argyle Diamond Mines Pty Ltd has submitted a proposal to recommence the mining of alluvial diamonds from Smoke and Limestone Creeks within its Argyle mining lease.
