EPA visit Port Hedland

Release date

The Environmental Protection Authority will today tour Port Hedland and meet with community and business members.

Chairman Paul Vogel said the site visit was an invaluable opportunity to discuss the projects and issues facing the town with more than 50 local stakeholders.

Together with Deputy Chairman Chris Whitaker and members Denis Glennon, Rod Lukatelich and Elizabeth Carr, the independent board will tour several projects, including BHP’s Outer Harbour project, the North West Infrastructure Multi-User Port and the Roy Hill Iron Ore Port.

The board will also inspect dredging of the South West Creek and the expansion of the Fortescue Metals Group port.

Dr Vogel said the board would meet with Shire representatives and the Port Hedland Industries Council members.

More than 50 community members will attend a forum to discuss local issues.

Dr Vogel said the Pilbara was an area that juxtaposed stunning natural assets, such as world class national parks, with extensive mineral and petroleum production.

“Site visits are an important part of the EPA’s responsibilities,” Dr Vogel said.

“Understanding and managing the cumulative environmental impacts of multiple developments in a region is essential.

“The opportunity to see first-hand proposed areas for development, and the environmental factors that may be impacted if a development proceeds, is integral to adding to our knowledge of a region. In addition, understanding whether impacts were as predicted for implemented projects is also important.

“Discussing the issues with community members and stakeholders is also extremely beneficial.”
