July 1, 2015

Environmental Protection Authority Chairman Dr Paul Vogel has today announced he will be stepping down from the position at the end of his current term in November.

Dr Vogel, who was appointed in November 2007, said he was proud of all the EPA had achieved during his tenure.

Dr Vogel is the second longest serving Chairman in the EPA’s 44 year history.

“To be the Chairman of the EPA in WA is an absolute privilege and I have devoted the past eight years of my life to this position,” Dr Vogel said.

"WA’s environment is extraordinary. Our State boasts twin riches: incredible environmental assets and vast mineral, oil and gas reserves. The exploitation of these natural resources brings both prosperity and risks to our environment. Managing these environmental risks presents unique challenges and I am proud that I have overseen a board that has highlighted the need to examine the bigger picture, shone a spotlight on the potential cumulative impacts on our environment and looked at how we can make a real, practical difference.”

Dr Vogel said he was grateful to have worked with many dedicated people across the scientific, academic, environment and government sectors and in particularly, his fellow board members and staff from the Office of the EPA.

“I am confident that I leave the EPA in good hands and with the foundations needed to meet the challenges of managing the environmental impacts on our state into the future,” he said.

Dr Vogel, who has a PhD in chemistry from the University of Western Australia, served as Chief Executive and Chairman of the South Australian EPA for five years from November 2002.

He continues his position as a board director of the Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination and Remediation of the Environment (CRC CARE), a director of the ATN Research Impact Advisory Board and member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Dr Vogel’s term will end on November 4, 2015.
