Iluka proposes to develop the Tutunup Mineral Sands Project, located approximately 195 km south of Perth, and 17 km east of Busselton. The proposal is for an open cut mine that will operate over approximately six years and will extract over 2.1 million tonnes (Mt) of heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) (mostly zircon and titanium minerals) from the IPL North mineral deposit. Ore will undergo initial onsite processing to produce HMC. Mining will commence at the most southern end of the deposit and progress to the north. The proposal is to construct a mineral sands mine at Cataby approximately 150 km north of Perth. The project will consist of a series of 13 open pits over approximately 25 kilometres, which will be progressively mined by dry mining techniques. The Cloverdale Mineral Sands proposal, located approximately 190km south of Perth in the Shires of Busselton and Capel, consists of two strands of heavy mineral deposits, 4.5km long.
