The proposal is for a bypass road around the urban areas of Busselton. The selected alignment has the potential for significant impacts on the Broadwater wetland suite, which has been recommended for conservation of its natural values in Recommendation 1.2 of the System One report (Environmental Protection Authority, 1973). Reid Highway is identified on the Metropolitan Region Scheme as a 'Controlled Access Highway'. When completed, Reid Highway would connect the Mitchell Freeway and Marmion Avenue in the west with Roe Highway just north of Midland. This proposal is for the 8.3km section of Reid Highway between Beechboro Road and the Great Northern Highway/Roe Highway intersection, which would complete the link between Mitchell Freeway and Roe Highway. An alignment for the Perth-Darwin National Highway from Reid Highway to Muchea and a future public transport corridor have been included by the State Planning Commission in a major amendment to the Metropolitan Region Scheme for the North East Metropolitan Corridor (Amendment No. 950/33). The proponents, the City of Cockburn, propose to duplicate a section of Farrington Road, approximately 450 m long from just west of Murdoch drive to approximately 150 m west of Bibra Drive to increase the number of lanes from two to four.
