The proposal includes the existing Cloudbreak iron ore mine and proposed expansion. The existing mine includes open pit strip mining, backfilling of pits, progressive rehabilitation and ore processing. The expansion includes increasing ore production, development of new pits and permanent waste landforms, the development of new infrastructure, additional dewatering and water disposal activities, an upgrade of the ore processing facility. The proposal is to develop eight iron ore deposits at five locations, between 35 and 85 kilometres (km) south of Pannawonica. A heavy-haulage railway approximately 285 km in length would be developed to connect the mine area with a port to be constructed at Anketell Point, 25 km north-east of Karratha. The original proposal, as set out in the proponent’s PER, comprised four iron ore mines in the Pilbara region, an ore beneficiation plant, a borefield, an accommodation village and 160km of east-west railway connecting to the north-south link to Port Hedland.
