The mine closure guidelines have been prepared jointly by the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). They are a revision of the 2011 guidelines and aim to ensure Western Australian mines can be decommissioned, rehabilitated and closed in an ecologically sustainable way.
Key updates include making the mine closure plan requirements at each stage of a mining operation clearer, reflecting a risk-based approach, and clarifying the general structure and content of Mine Closure Plans.
To ensure continuous improvement, a review of the guidelines will be initiated within three years of the publication date of this version.
The content of this guideline has not been updated to reflect the EPA’s revised policy framework.
