Role and Functions of the EPA
Summary: The EPA was established by Parliament as an independent Authority with the broad objective of protecting the State's environment. This is undertaken through the process of providing overarching environmental advice to the Minister for the Environment through the preparation of environmental protection policies and the assessment of development proposals and management plans, as well as providing public statements about matters of environmental importance.

Operational relationship between the EPA and DoE
Summary: The matter of services to the EPA was considered as part of the Machinery of Government review in 2001 which proposed that the EPA be supported by a dedicated staffing unit for environmental impact assessment and policy development housed within a new Department of Environment (DoE). The EPA is directly responsible for this unit known as the EPA Service Unit. A Service Agreement was negotiated between the EPA and DoE to address the operational relationship. The Agreement was signed by both parties on 18 March 2002 and endorsed by the Minister for the Environment on the 26 March 2002.
