EPA Report 1404 - Wheatstone Development - Gas processing, export facilities and infrastructure

The Environmental Protection Authority has recommended conditional environmental approval of Chevron Australia’s ‘Wheatstone’ proposal for a 25 million tonne per annum (Mtpa) liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant and associated facilities on the Pilbara coast near Onslow.

Rural subdivision, Preston Beach Road, Lake Clifton (Report 1401)

The Environmental Protection Authority has released advice and recommendations to the Minister for Environment on the proposal to subdivide lots 1000, 2240, 2275, 2657 and 3045 Preston Beach Road, Lake Clifton by Cape Bouvard Investments Pty Ltd.

The proposal site is an enclave within the adjacent Yalgorup National Park, as it is bound by the ocean to the west, a rural property along a portion of its southern boundaries and Yalgorup NP along all the remaining boundaries. The proposal would result in the clearing of 114.5 hectares of native vegetation.

Statement from EPA Chairman Paul Vogel on Australian Financial Review article of 2nd May 2011

While many of the matters raised by Peter Kerr in his article, Margaret River mine ban rushed (AFR, 2nd May 2011) are dealt with in the EPA’s report on the Vasse Coal proposal released yesterday and will also be dealt with in any subsequent appeal to the Minister for Environment, I cannot let a couple of statements made in his article pass without comment.

Coastal Walk Trail from Point Ann to Hamersley Inlet – Fitzgerald River National Park (Report 1396)

The Environmental Protection Authority has set level of assessment and released advice and recommendations to the Minister for Environment on the proposal by the Department of Environment and Conservation to construct and maintain a 45 kilometre coastal walk trail from Point Ann to Hamersley Inlet, through the Wilderness Management Zone of the Fitzgerald River National Park.

The EPA advertised its decision on level of assessment, Assessment on Proponent Information (API) category B (environmentally unacceptable) on 21 March 2011.

Level of Assessment for Vasse Coal Management’s Vasse Coal Proposal
21 March 2011

The EPA Board considered this proposal at its meeting on 17 March 2011. The EPA determined, based on the referral information and its own investigations and inquiries, that there is adequate information to demonstrate that Vasse Coal Management’s coal mining proposal is environmentally unacceptable.
