| Summary: The Wheelarra Hill mine was started by Hancock Mining Ltd and has been operating since 1989 under the Iron Ore (McCamey's Monster) Agreement Authorisation Act 1972. In 1992 BHP Minerals Ltd acquired the mine, which is located 40km east of the town of Newman, in the Opthalmia Range. Subsequent exploration east and west of the original mine has boosted the known ore reserves and the proposal is to extend the existing pit, create new ones and expand production from the currently approved 8 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 12mtpa of Marra Mamba iron ore, over the envisaged mine life of about 50 years. The ore will be transported to Newman by train for blending with product from other mines in the area before being railed to Port Hedland, as is currently the case. | Summary: This report provides the Environmental Protection Authority's (EPA's) advice to the Minister for the Environment on the proposal by Mr Q R Bricknell to clear approximately 77 hectares of native vegetation for pasture and cropping at Melbourne Location 926, approximately 27 kilometres East of Watheroo. The proponent submitted a Notice of Intent to Clear approximately 112 ha of native remnant vegetation in January 2003 to the Commissioner for Soil and Land Conservation. During the assessment of the proposal by the Department of Agriculture Land Conservation Officer the total proposed clearing was revised to 77 ha. It is this proposal that was referred to the EPA and is the subject of this report. | Summary: Groundwater abstraction from the Jandakot Mound for public water supply is subject to environmental conditions issued in Statement 253 by the Minister for the Environment on 29 April 1992. The current nominated proponent is the Water and Rivers Commission (WRC).
The EPA has delegated responsibility under section 20 of the Environmental Protection Act to audit compliance by the WRC with the environmental conditions applying to groundwater abstraction from the Jandakot Mound and also the Gnangara Mound. This delegation was gazetted on 26 September 2003.
This report provides the advice of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to the Minister for the Environment in relation to compliance with environmental conditions.

| Summary: This report provides the Environmental Protection Authority's (EPA's) advice and recommendations to the Minister for the Environment in response to a request from the Minister to provide advice under Section 16(e) of the Environmental Protection Act 1986. Advice was requested on statutory mechanisms to control quality and quantity of drainage into the Swan and Canning Rivers. The management of urban drainage has been identified as a high priority in reducing nutrients entering the rivers and the Minister requests strategic advice on the means to improve co-ordination and statutory responsibility for the control and management of the impact of urban drainage on these rivers.
